Sukiyaki
The name Sukiyaki comes from two words.  Suki means "hoe" and also means "like, to be fond of" while Yaki means "broiled".  There are many other theories.  Some smart farmers used a hoe as a skillet to cook whatever meat they could find on the spot.  For that reason or perhaps not, a shallow cast-iron pan is used for Sukiyaki.  It is one-pot cookery and is cooked at the table.  So much can be prepared ahead of time, and the cooking time itself is short.  All ingredients are very attractively assembled on a large platter.  Each diner is allowed to choose whatever he or she likes out of simmering flavourful cooking broth.  Hot plain rice makes a good accompaniment.
