Major considerations, or, how to avoid deficiencies

But, what about vitamin D? If the calcium : phosphorus ratio is correct, excessive vitamin D will not affect the mineral absorption from the digestive tract. However, the minerals will be leached from the bones because of the excess quantities of vitamin D in the blood. Calcium phosphate deposits in the body’s soft tissues and organs while the bones become lacy with holes. Eventually, the dog will die when the kidneys become saturated with the minerals.

Table Scraps:

Dogs existed for thousands of years eating table scraps . It’s logical to think that table scraps would be an ideal way to improve the overall nutritive value of a dog’s diet. However, just as dog food has changed over the years, so too has the food at our tables. With the advent of commercial dog food, fewer dogs eat table scraps. As human food has become more commercially prepared, its suitability as dog food has declined. Table scraps have plenty of calories, but with little else that is usable by the dog’s body systems. Table scraps can improve the palatability of commercial food, but they must be finely chopped and blended together.
